"After performing in The Skin of Our Teeth in Paris in 1955, I went to the Picasso Museum in Antibes and met Picasso’s sponsor, Madame Marie Cuttoli. When we got to the top floor, I said, “Oh what a wonderful studio,” and she said, “This is where Picasso painted during the war.” I thought, “I’m going to try to see Picasso!” (I was young and had a lot of nerve!). So I went to Ville-Franche, found out where he lived and started drawing outside on the street. His daughter Maya came out to ask who I was and what I was doing. We got talking in French, and she said, “You know, stay here. My father is going to a bullfight and when he comes back he’ll want to meet you.” Sure enough, her father came back and saw this kid outside drawing, and the concierge said, “What are you doing?” but he said, “Bring her in!” So I went in, and then he invited me to come back the next day, and the next day after that. It was thrilling because Picasso was my absolute top main hero! I started crying when I met him, I was so affected by it. I managed to say in English (not in French), “I forgot all the French I know!” And he said in English, “All I know in English is ‘Good-bye, glad to have met you.’” Then he put his arm around me and I cried more. He showed me around his garden and I gradually began to speak French again. Then I met Jaqueline and we talked -- it was all so wonderful!”
